Title XVIII of the Social Security Act, commonly known as Medicare, was implemented in 1966 to provide health insurance coverage to Americans 65 years old and older. Over time the program was expanded to include anyone that is legally blind, suffers from End–Stage Renal Disease, and those that are disabled and collect Social Security Disability Benefits. Even though Medicare has been an integral part of the American culture for over 40 years, very few people understand the program and how it works, including seniors in Tennessee. Medicare has four parts:
Medicare Part A Most people age 65 or older who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States are eligible for Medicare Part A at no charge. One of the following circumstances must be met:
Anyone not meeting one of the aforementioned circumstances may still be able to receive Medicare Part A coverage by paying a monthly premium. Medicare Part B Medicare Part C It is crucial to remember that not all Medicare Advantage plans are approved in all Tennessee counties. If a Knox County resident purchased a plan approved for Knox County and then subsequently moved to Williamson County, it may be necessary to purchase a different plan.
