Health insurance is an important component of a family′s financial security, and with healthcare costs at an all–time high, no Tennessee family can afford to be without it. The struggle for many isn′t deciding if they need it, it′s deciding what type of health insurance is best for them before requesting a quote. Health insurance can be categorized into four different types:
Traditional Health Insurance Consumer Driven Health Care (CDHC) CDHC plans help control cost by shifting more health care responsibility to the consumer by forgoing copays and setting higher deductibles. A recent study found that CDHC plan patients were twice as likely as those in traditional health plans to ask about cost and then three times as likely to choose a less expensive treatment option, and chronic patients were 20% more likely to follow treatment regimes more carefully. Although it may not seem so initially, the goal of any CDHC plan isn′t to reduce benefits, but instead to motivate the consumer to take a more active role in their own healthcare management. Since CDHC plans use higher deductibles without copays, it seems only natural for consumers to take advantage of the health savings account (HSA) feature. The advantages of a health savings account are numerous and is quickly making this type of coverage a popular choice for Tennessee small business owners that provide their own health coverage. Because this type of plan is less expensive than a traditional health plan, HSA owners can use premium savings to fund the savings account, which earns tax–deferred interest. The money (including interest) accumulated in the savings account can then be used to pay for qualified medical expenses, which includes some benefits that are not covered under a traditional plan such as dental, vision, and medical supplies to name a few. Another popular feature of a CDHC is the family deductible. Instead of each family member having an individual deductible like those found in traditional plans, there is only one shared deductible for the entire family in a CDHC, which in itself could save a family thousands of dollars each year. The advantages of a CDHP with a HSA are too good for any individual/family to not give this type of healthcare plan serious consideration. Guaranteed Issue Health Plans
All of the following are regarded as creditable coverage:
Although traditional and short–term health plans do qualify as creditable coverage, most recent coverage must have been through an employer–sponsored health plan, COBRA, state continuation, a government plan, or a church plan to qualify for guaranteed issue health insurance. Short-Term Health Insurance Because short–term health insurance is temporary and nonrenewable, it′s the most inexpensive type of coverage available, but it′s also the most dangerous because this type of coverage is not designed as a substitute for permanent individual/family coverage. If someone developed a preexisting condition while on a temporary plan they would likely have that condition excluded from future coverage or even be declined health insurance altogether.
