Tennessee Insurance Group: 90-Second Health Insurance Quote Request

Health insurance is an important component of a family′s financial security, and with healthcare costs at an all–time high, no Tennessee family can afford to be without it. The struggle for many isn′t deciding if they need it, it′s deciding what type of health insurance is best for them before requesting a quote.

Health insurance can be categorized into four different types:

  1. Traditional Health Insurance Plans
  2. Consumer Driven Health Care (CDHC) Plans
  3. Guaranteed Issue Health Plans
  4. Short–Term Health Insurance Plans

Traditional Health Insurance
This is the type of health plan that most people are accustomed to. Like most health insurance plans, these plans have a deductible & coinsurance and usually (but not always) have copays for office visits and prescriptions. While each family member would have to meet their deductible and coinsurance individually, all procedures, supplies, or prescriptions that are eligible for copays would be exempt. Traditional health insurance is the most commonly received quote request.

Consumer Driven Health Care (CDHC)
Because of rising health care costs and increasing health insurance premiums, consumer driven health care plans are becoming a very popular choice for employers that offer group coverage as well as for individual/families that provide their own coverage.

CDHC plans help control cost by shifting more health care responsibility to the consumer by forgoing copays and setting higher deductibles. A recent study found that CDHC plan patients were twice as likely as those in traditional health plans to ask about cost and then three times as likely to choose a less expensive treatment option, and chronic patients were 20% more likely to follow treatment regimes more carefully. Although it may not seem so initially, the goal of any CDHC plan isn′t to reduce benefits, but instead to motivate the consumer to take a more active role in their own healthcare management.

Since CDHC plans use higher deductibles without copays, it seems only natural for consumers to take advantage of the health savings account (HSA) feature. The advantages of a health savings account are numerous and is quickly making this type of coverage a popular choice for Tennessee small business owners that provide their own health coverage. Because this type of plan is less expensive than a traditional health plan, HSA owners can use premium savings to fund the savings account, which earns tax–deferred interest. The money (including interest) accumulated in the savings account can then be used to pay for qualified medical expenses, which includes some benefits that are not covered under a traditional plan such as dental, vision, and medical supplies to name a few.

Another popular feature of a CDHC is the family deductible. Instead of each family member having an individual deductible like those found in traditional plans, there is only one shared deductible for the entire family in a CDHC, which in itself could save a family thousands of dollars each year.

The advantages of a CDHP with a HSA are too good for any individual/family to not give this type of healthcare plan serious consideration.

Guaranteed Issue Health Plans
Guaranteed issue health plans are just what they sound like … guaranteed coverage. All health conditions (even preexisting) are covered by this type of plan without waiting periods. Anyone may enter a guaranteed issue plan if (all conditions must be met):

  • They have maintained creditable coverage for a minimum of 18 months prior to applying for a guaranteed issue health plan; and
  • They have exhausted all available COBRA or state continuation benefits; and
  • They are not eligible for Medicare Part A or Part B, Medicaid, TennCare, or any other group coverage; and
  • Their previous health coverage is no longer available to them; and
  • Their previous coverage was not canceled due to fraud or non-payment of premiums; and
  • They have not had a lapse in coverage exceeding 63 days.

All of the following are regarded as creditable coverage:

  • Employer–sponsored health plan (group coverage)
  • COBRA (groups 20+)
  • State continuation (groups 19-)
  • Government or State of Tennessee sponsored health plans such as TennCare, TRICARE, CHAMPUS, or CHAMPVA
  • Church plans
  • Traditional health insurance plans
  • Short–term health insurance plans

Although traditional and short–term health plans do qualify as creditable coverage, most recent coverage must have been through an employer–sponsored health plan, COBRA, state continuation, a government plan, or a church plan to qualify for guaranteed issue health insurance.

Short-Term Health Insurance
Also known as temporary coverage, this type of insurance is typically sold in increments of one month up to twelve months. Short–term health insurance is ideal for a recent college graduate that needs coverage while deciding where to begin their career, anyone waiting for employer group coverage to begin, or anyone in between jobs and needing temporary coverage.

Because short–term health insurance is temporary and nonrenewable, it′s the most inexpensive type of coverage available, but it′s also the most dangerous because this type of coverage is not designed as a substitute for permanent individual/family coverage. If someone developed a preexisting condition while on a temporary plan they would likely have that condition excluded from future coverage or even be declined health insurance altogether.

Optional Riders
An insurance rider is an amendment to an insurance contract allowing additional benefits to be added to the base policy. In regard to health insurance, there are several common riders available:

  • OFFICE VISITS – Allows for treatment received in a physician’s office to be covered for a predetermined copayment instead of requiring the insured to first meet the health plan’s deductible.
  • DRUG COVERAGE – Allows for medications prescribed by a physician to be filled at participating pharmacies for a copayment instead of requiring the insured to first meet the health plan’s deductible.
  • DENTAL – Offers coverage for care received by a dentist which is not ordinarily included in a health plan’s base policy.
  • ACCIDENT EXPENSE – Offers a predetermined amount of first dollar coverage for accidental injuries. For example, a benefit of $500 simply means that the insured, if injured in an accident, would have $500 available to use for the injury to help meet the health plan’s deductible.
  • TERM LIFE – Some health insurance companies offer a term life insurance rider that can be purchased without requiring a medical exam.
